 Through videogames, kids may get

interested in technology very soon in their life. Overall, gaming may create
an educational future where teachers can recreate a more engaging and
connected environment, and students may benefit to develop critical skills
by attending exciting lessons. Many classical literature teachers are
bringing visualization games in the classroom to explain Odysseus’s
journey. According to Paul Darvasi, “Alternate reality games can be used
as an immersive learning system that combines rich narrative, digital
technology, and real-world game play. Students must exercise critical
thinking, resilience, and creative problem solving to succeed in an
alternate reality game.”

The benefits of videogames have also reached education with game-based learning. This teaching method uses beneficial aspects of videogames to transmit knowledge to students. It is based on three key factors:

  • It breathes life into education: it transforms learning into an enjoyable, thrilling game without boring lessons. Students assimilate and retain information almost without noticing.
  • It boosts motivation: students are the main characters in the story and their success is rewardedwith medals, extra lives, bonuses, etc. This captures and keeps their interest in learning.
  • It gives opportunities to practice: students can apply the knowledge they acquire without getting into dangerous situations. This is what flight and navigation simulators, for instance, are all about.

disadvantages

Too much of anything is bad and this includes game-based learning as well. The excessive use of game-based learning can lead to needless competition among employees to win badges and medals that are an integral part of games. This can bring with it some of the following risks:

  • Learner focus shifts to winning rather than learning, especially if the rewards assume more significance
  • Shifts employees’ focus away from collaboration
  • Diminishes the importance of cooperation and sharing of ideas
